WinXP update failed

when I go to installation history under WinXP update it states that a couple of updates failed, but will not give me the option to try and reinstall. So how can I try to reinstall the failed updates? Is there any other way to download the updates besides Win Update

Be careful. I had a failure of a couple of Win updates on a new build the other day and it brought practically brought the whole system down. The culprit was the ".net framework" update. Long story but it showed it as installed but the "notes" on that particular update said that it may need to be installed twice. WTF??? Anyway, the system was practically non reactive at times. I was able to uninstall the same update and the trouble disappeared. Yes, before that I tried to reinstall as it was suggested. That didn't work. Only unistalling it helped the system. Just a word to the wise.

Looks like I spoke to soon. Yea I can download it, but what do I do with it after that? How do I make it reinstall?

buz2b: It is the same ( .net framework) update that I'm having problems with. How did you get it to install a second time? it wont give me the option to reinstall.

When you said non reactive at times, was is when it says "starting windows XP" after the splash screen. I have been having a problem with it just sticking there doing nothing.

Don't even bother to attempt to reinstall!! I tried that and it just sat there forever; nothing changed or seemed to load. Just go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it. Warning, you may well have to let the system set for a bit as it will appear as though it is unresponsive. Just leave it alone and walk away. It will eventually uninstall it.

Not quite. The system I was building would go ahead and load windows but you couldn't do squat after it did. Right clicking on anything did absolutely nothing. Clicking on an icon would get a brief hourglass, then nothing. This would go on and on until I got tired of it and tried to reboot. Then it would just sit there; again doing nothing.
I do remember though that it also took a lot longer to load XP also. Probably took about 2X longer to load, but it did load. You might want to try to go into Safe Mode and uninstall that update.
BTW, I did inform MS in two different emails about this. Hopefully they will, or have, done something to rectify this.

I just remembered something else. When this whole thing started, there were also (as you mentioned) two other items that "failed" during the update. It really sounds like you have the same problem I did. I eventually got it to uninstall and saved things but it was close. Just go to the Add/Remove programs and uninstall the updates (by date) that you did today. If I remember correctly you cannot tell by the listings which update it is. That is why I say go by the dates. After that, you can go back to the update site and reinstall other updates if you want. I did that; just avoiding the ".net framework" update altogether.
As I said, I notified MS, but am not holding my breath until they respond or take action.
