I swapped my primary HDD to a new system setup that's without HDD. So I fired it up but no matter what I do, it just won't load into WindowsXP. It just restarts every time when it tries to load into WinXP.

I've tried SafeMode also; but it stopped loading when it reads the file "system32/drivers/mup.sys" then it reboots again.

I've also try to access Documents and Setting folder on this HDD from another system; but it says that "Access Denied". It must be some sort of privacy protection.

All I want is the file from My Documents, but I cannot access the folder nor boot into WinXP. What can I do?

Thx

p.s. I don't have the old system setup with me. So I cannot swap the HDD back to the original setup.

I'm almost sorry to say it, but if you don't have the old system, then you won't be able to boot, and if you made the My Documents folder Private (encrypted), then without booting from the same install of Windows, you won't be able to get to the documents.

Windows 2000 and XP are "tied" to an IDE controller for booting, and if it doesn't have the right drivers to boot from, then it won't, and you'll get an Innaccessible_boot_device error.

As for not being able to access your documents, you are now seeing the results of that bit of text when you made stuff private that says "no one else will be able to read the files", one bit of XP that works as it should.

Haven't had this problem myself but a quick search on Google uncovered some suggestions:

1a. Boot into the Windows XP Recovery Console.

1b. At the recovery prompt type "disable mup.sys".

2. If you are using a USB mouse or any USB devices remove them.

3. Remove PCI cards.

Good luck.

I had to deal with this myself and booting off the CD doing a repair/reinstall worked. It was good enough for me to get in there, make a newa partition, then install a fresh OS onto the new partition. It can run off the repair installation, but with any serious change in hardware or old drive - new machine, you should reinstal the OS and applications.

With any new os, my route is always:

Install the OS
then chipset drivers
then graphics/PCI cards drivers
then update the OS with patches
then install apps
