I swapped my primary HDD to a new system setup that's without HDD. So I fired it up but no matter what I do, it just won't load into WindowsXP. It just restarts every time when it tries to load into WinXP.

I've tried SafeMode also; but it stopped loading when it reads the file "system32/drivers/mup.sys" then it reboots again.

I've also try to access Documents and Setting folder on this HDD from another system; but it says that "Access Denied". It must be some sort of privacy protection.

All I want is the file from My Documents, but I cannot access the folder nor boot into WinXP. What can I do?

Thx

p.s. I don't have the old system setup with me. So I cannot swap the HDD back to the original setup.

XP doesn't take kindly to radical changes in computer hardware. I think it has something to do with protection against piracy.

You might try a repair install. That should leave your My Doc files alone.

Or you could load up some sort of NTFS-compatible OS like Win 2K and throw the XP HDD in as a slave.

I did that. I put it as a slave and I could access all the files EXCEPT Document and Settings folder.... It gives me an "Access Denied" msg.

I am not quite sure how to do a repair installation. I think that I tried something like that from the bootable WinXP CD and I selected the repair thing; but that took me to the DOS console.. I am not very familiar with DOS console. I also tried to access the Document and Settings folder from the DOS console, but it still gives me Access Denied msg.

Oh, sorry, I must've skipped that line.

Here's a walkthru on doing a repair install in XP:

Yeah, my Windows XP couldn't handle an upgrade from a 760MP chipset board to a 760MPX.

Oh, well.

/me fills in the standard, 'Should have just ran linux you stoopid newbie'.

When your doing the NT OS thing with XP as a slave, go to the permissions tab and take ownership of the files.. You should then be able to access the folder, and get the file you want.
