WinXP to get DX10

Guess there is no need to upgrade to vista at all now. 😀

DirectX 9.L will be a DirectX 10 for Windows XP

Apparently

By Fuad Abazovic: Monday 16 October 2006, 09:45

WE MANAGED TO glean a few facts about the upcoming DirectX 9.0 L we told you about here.
DirectX 9.0 L is simply a renamed and refurbished DirectX 10 for Windows XP. It will make DirectX 10 games to work on Windows XP.

And games such as the upcoming Crysis won't work on the existing DirectX 9.0 c. they need a DirectX 9.0 L

One of the biggest issues is the fact that Nvidia or ATI won't have any mainstream or entry-level cards until at least mid- to end of Q1 2007. This suggests that if Vista tips up around the beginning of the year, gamers will be turned off by it.

Electronic Arts, the publisher of Crysis, wants to sell hundreds or thousands, even millions of copies and we doubt that Nvidia can produce and sell that many Geforce 8800 GTX and GTS cards.

It will be interesting to see whether the Windows XP Crysis will be different from the Vista ones. µ

However, the whole purpose of DirectX 10 was to take advantage of the core operating system changes and driver/kernel interaction that would take place in Windows Vista. It wasn't just another upgrade like 7 -> 8 -> 9, it was completely redesigned and not backward compatible. I suspect that if this rumor were to be true, it would mainly try to virtualize the changes made and offer much lower performance for DirectX 10 games on XP as opposed to Vista, but still allowing them to work.

We know for sure they won't be altering Windows XP to match what DirectX 10 requires and how it operates (an update to make XP like Vista? Not likely.), so they must be changing the version of DirectX 10 for XP in a way that it won't really be the same as the Vista version, but at least compatible.

So I'm expecting lower performance with 9.0L vs 10, if this rumor were true.

Pfft.. Windows 95 running strong here, no reason to upgrade at all. 😛

I'd be extremely skeptical of the source. The Vista driver model is completely different from XP, and that's a major reason why Microsoft's developers decided to make DirectX 10 Vista-only. Backporting DX10 to XP's driver model would be an enormous development effort, and I don't see what Microsoft gains from doing it.

I suspect that we will see an update. The "L" version is dicey though (part listed as Vista DX9 Legacy control - see GeForStan's links in Video). But then again, MS has pulled stuff like this and could match the version. DX9 is ready for a final bugfix.

And Fuad just reports what "reliable" sources tell him. He knows some stuff, but is not an expert (just a reporter.) Yep, always take it with a grain of salt. But the reason to read the Inq is that they are NOT covered by NDA, so can report leaked information. And if it is wrong, unlike other reports, Fuad will admit it.

Surely you will not require DX9L/10 to play Crysis... I'm sure I've seen it running on an x1900xt.

That may not mean that they don't have a new version loaded though. Happens alot and I have seen where the next version of DX was running before it was really public knowledge.

Didn't INQ report a while back that AMD was going to buy ATI and then everyone was like "Ain't gonna happen" Even AMD denied it, but where we are.

And with the fat hit games take just from running under vista, the two should probably end up about even.

The inquirer is pretty weird. I like to read it, even though I don't take it to seriously. They bring up some interesting potentials, if nothing else.

Wait, wasn't this in the video forum were it was later decided that 9.0L was for DX9 cards for Windows Vista (L meaning Longhorn).

And there's another article on the inq about it.

Although I'm too lazy to look it up, I believe the Inq published that this rumor turned out to be untrue. I keep up on their RSS feed and I remember seeing something to this effect. I'll leave the searching to you all though. 😛
