I have a situation that Im hoping you can suggest a way that will work for me. I have an ATTO SCSI RAID controller that uses a symbios chipset which ATTO has written a special driver set for that enables a Raided Array. In the past the only way this controller could be used in Windows 2000 as a bootable Raid array, was to take the TXTSETUP.SIF file and modify it to edit out all references to symbios. You simply used Wordpad to view it, edit out the references by inserting semi-colon in front of those lines, saved the file and all worked great. This file is located on the first boot disk of the 4 Win2k Pro boot disks.

Now along comes WinXP and they change the TXTSETUP.sif from a word readable file to TXTSETUP.SI_ (<---yes thats an underscore) that is a binary file which cannot be read with word in text as before. I want to simply edit out those symbios references from it, so I can use the 6 bootup disks to install XP, instead of having to install Win2k first and upgradeing. Is there anyway to convert a binary file into a word readable file, to edit and convert back to binary?

If the symbios references are not edited out, all NT OS see this as a symbios controller and the Raid Array is not seen, thus preventing normal format and install to the array, It will always see the drives individually, even if you install the updated driver during install. This is why the symbios references must be edited out.

Thanks for any suggestions

Easy.

Expand txtsetup.si_ to txtsetup.sif. Edit the file. Delete txtsetup.si_ from your install location. Proceed as before.
