Winxp takes 6 mins to become "active" after i log on to the desktop

K, this is really bugging me. I didnt have this prob when I installed earlier this morning.

Now when i load up, and my account shows up, i choose it, log in, and it loads. THe desktop appears, i can see my short cuts and links, the task bar appears etc etc, but the system is in "busy mode" for about 6 or so mins, and hten POOF its back to normal and everything is good to go again. The lil annoying "learn how to get your .net passport" thing appears.

I remember somthing simliar to this happening on a win98 machine when the system was trying to get a DHCP address or somthing, and it took a hell of a long timet o load. Seems similar here, but i dont know what to do to fix it? my network settings are fine, everything is setup fine,...... I have to use DHCP but the gateway and dns stuff is all fine. When it finally "kicks" in, the network icon beside the clock then appears and i have no prob surfing the internet. Should i remove DHCP and just 'hard code' the IP# in there?

So what hte hell is going on? How do i fix this??? P3 900 half gig of ram laptop is the system its on.

heres another one...

CTRL+ALT+DEL in winxp does not bring up the abilty to lock the screen... i only see the task mon... LOCK COMPUTER does not appear anywhere... I dont press CTRL ALT DEL to log on either. How do i enable that???

whats up with that? its not in the start button thingy either by shutdown/log off.

What o.s. are you running on the other systems in the network (if there are any)
Is your problem system connected to a peer-peer or domain ?
Are you using a hub / switch / router ?
I prefer assigning static I.P.'s personally. I have experienced similar frustration as you with DHCP

you can lock the computer by holding the windows key down, then L.
run "gpedit"
User configuration
admin templates
system
ctrl+alt+del options

check to see if "remove lock computer" is enabled. If it is, disable it.
I have my xp system set to prompt me for a password when coming out of screensaver, but for the life of me, I can't remember how I did it. I suspect it is somewhere in the gpedit.

This forum had a faq post appx. 1 month ago that went through all sorts of cool tweaks, one of them was creating a shortcut to lock the computer. I don't know where the residing now, try running a search.
