WinXP still useable on new hardware?

For those folks still loving XP, will it work on current video card, motherbaords, etc.....

I know it is 2001 technology, and I have moved on myself, but honestly a lot of older adults cannot grasp vista / 7.

Just had a client get a brand new Lenovo desktop, and by request, it came pre-loaded with XP Pro, and all her software works. She's a happy camper. I doubt that she'll ever use the Win 7 CD that came with it. 🙂

Just make sure that your XP install CD is SP2 or later, otherwise you will get a BSOD during install in PCI.SYS on motherboards that support PCI-E 2.0.

Seriously, people that "cannot grasp vista / 7" are the people that need it the most. When connected to the Internet, XP is way too easy to completely screw the system up. For viruses and spyware, Windows 7 is much safer. It is also easier to use. I've seen way too many perfectly fine XP installs get completely destroyed by viruses that find it way to easy to exploit holes and poor programming of XP. Windows XP makes it way to easy for malicious software to burrow in and corrupt the OS registry. Most of this happens with simple web browsing, if you go to the wrong website and let add-ons and stuff be installed. The core operating system of Windows 7 is way tougher to exploit.

Seriously, in the vast majority of cases it is not an issue of people being able to "grasp vista/windows 7" but rather that they simply do not want to use it (I personally hate the UI in both), or in some cases CANNOT use it because software that they need to use will not run in Vista or 7 even with the Compatibility Mode.

That is precisely the case. The lady has a an arts and crafts business at home, and all her software is vintage. It runs in XP, but not in Vista or 7. I have tried to move her to Win 7 and use XP in a VM for those legacy softwares. I put them on my own machine and let her try it. Bottom line - the whole notion of any thing that looks different is a non-starter.

OTOH, her husband has a new HP laptop with Win 7 - and he has yet to figure out basic email. I do make house calls. 🙂

yep, some older installers won't run in Vista/7, so you are screwed.

As of last month, we were still buying new Dells with "modern" hardware with XP Professional pre-installed (they also come with Windows 7 Professional licenses). We have clients that are running older versions of AutoCAD and other tools that can be troublesome with Vista/Win7.

Don't forget many organizations are still on XP. I've worked for 3 major clients in the DC area and all are still on XP. In fact one of them was a law firm and just went to SP3 2 months ago.

Windows Virtual PC under Windows 7 works wonders for these people... essentially a VM running Windows XP for those pesky, outdated and unsupported crapplications that only run under XP.
