WinXP & Stereo Receiver

I have two friends who recently upgraded to WinXP from Win98. Both have stereo receivers hooked up to their computers for audio output. This setup worked fine with Win98 but it doesn't work with WinXP. One friend reports that nothing comes out of his speakers. The other friend gets a hissing noise from his speakers, although you can faintly hear the desired music in the background.

The friend who can fainlty hear the music has his receiver hooked up to the onboard audio provided from his Dell 2650 Desktop... Is this a driver issue? Has anyone else had this problem? Please help!

Thanks!

I don't think so. Since the Dell 2650 was purchased in May, I didn't think it would need a driver update.

And one more thing, I don't have any information on their receivers other than they are older and nothing too special.

Have you tried using regular pc speakers or headphones? Have you checked that the different lines isnt turned down in the sound properties?

Tell us what troubleshooting has been done, so we dont have to guess.

What about the sounds cards? Have you double-checked to make sure everything is securely plugged in. Check the audio properties, make sure everything is un-muted.
BTW, I ablsolutely detest upgrading from 9.x to XP. Going from 9.x to XP is like pulling off a Michael Jackson. There the major kernal change and alot of files get jumbled around and deleted. A clean install of XP is the best choice.

For the person who hears the audio softly, tell them to make sure they didn't use the digital out on the soundcard to an analog in on the receiver. For both of them, make sure the soundcards work using headphones or something else, and to check all the volume controls to make sure they are set at appropriate levels.

When they said upgrade to WinXP, I think they meant they bought a new computer with WinXP to replace an old 98 machine. I don't think Dell sold any computer in May with 98 preinstalled.
