WinXP SP2- Unknown USB device keeps trying to install

i have a handspring visor pda (aka palm pilot).

i installed the software, then plugged the craddle into the usb port. it had a problem installing the driver. i plugged the craddle into another usb port and it worked.

but now i have "unknown device" in the USB section. and it takes 5x longer now to boot up. i tried uninstalling it, but winxp reinstalls it as unknown device even though the craddle is in another usb port.

i rebooted, then uninstalled -> same

i unplugged the craddle, rebooted, then uninstalled=> same. it tried to reinstall.

WTF?!

how do i remove that device permanently?
