WinXP SP2 suckage with dual nics - careful everyone

OK I'm TICKED off!!

At our house, we run our broadband access through a router, which connects two computers directly to the internet. One of the PCs is used as an ICS machine to share a connection to the kids area via a LAN connection. This LAN also handles File and printer sharing, but I've always kept file and printer sharing OFF the NICs that connect to the Internet directly through the router. This has been a great solution that SP1 handled sublimely through the Network setup wizard (I know a wizard, but hey it worked).

SP2 will NOT allow protocols such as file and printer sharing to be independently assigned to different NICs any longer, so IF you choose to share files or printers over your LAN, guess what - ALL YOUR NICS will have file and printer sharing protocol bound to them.

Is anyone aware of a way around this?

I can't believe Microsoft would have SCREWED the pooch this badly, but maybe they just have LOTS of faith in their new software firewall.

I have SP2 and multiple NICs on the computer I'm using right now, and I can disable File & Printer Sharing on one of the NICs without affecting the other one.

Go to Start-> Settings -> Network Connections -> (NIC you want to disable File & Printer Sharing on)
Click on "Properties"
Uncheck the box next to "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" in the "This connection uses the following items:" list
Click OK

Holy crap!

You saved me!

I can't believe I didn't see the freaking check box!

My mistake was I was trying to remove the binding completely from that nic. Apparently Microsoft, in their attempt to make it "easier" to network insists that if you select a protocol, or service it applies to ALL nics in the PC. Freaky. It used to be that this happened too in the Win98 era, but they would allow you to remove individual bindings in the network dialog. Now it is a global setting that you have to check and uncheck per nic.

This kind of crap drives me crazy. Goof with something I'm used to and it screws me all up.

Thanks for the help JW310!
