For those running WinXP, does anyone have it an a multi-processor board. I know the pro version supports smp, anyone taking advantage of it? If so, is there a speed increase in booting, multi-tasking, etc?
I will be installing it on a dual p3 866 on Tuesday/Wednesday depending on when my RAM arrives, but I wont be able to give you a comparison on how it works on a single processor system.
In general things run smoother not necessarily faster. Very few apps take advantage of SMP themselves because threaded programming is a bitch and so few people have SMP boxes, but if you multitask a lot you'll see the performance difference there. It's also nice to be able to run 2 copies of unrar and have them both run full speed =)
You won't really see a big performance increase in booting, and general applications and stuff. But doing some hard core caculations with a multithreaded program such as photoshop or something will have a significant performance increase.
I have a couple of SMP boxes and I would agree that there is not much change from Win2k. The boot time is significantly faster, but from what I have read that is true of XP in general and not specific to SMP. As stated Photoshop absolutely flies.
