I have AVG Free 8.5 for my antivirus, happy with it for years. I have it set to scan at 1am. This morning something was cranking away at 6am, making everything else unbearably slow. Task Manager showed avgcsrvx.exe eating up 4,8,15% of CPU. I tried killing the process, it popped back, sometimes several of them. Tried killing the AVG services in Services, the watchdog has no Stop command. Curious. Anyway, I just went to Shut Down. Not Restart, a full Shutdown of Windows.
So the normal logoff/shutdown screen comes along, and after saving my personal settings and all that, a message says "Installing update 1 of 1 ..." and every few seconds it changed to "Do not shut down or unplug your computer. Windows will do that automatically."
That went on several minutes and I got concerned. I have never seen Windows installing an update at shutdown. I sometimes come to the computer in the morning and see that an update was done and I got restarted. But never seen it at my own shutdown
Is it normal to see an update at shutdown? Because of the screwy AVG behavior, I wondered if some kind of security problem was at work. It would have to be a pretty good one, to mimic AVG and Windows, I know
thanks
