WinXP Shares

How the heck do I keep shares to stay persistent? I tried net use F: \\server\share /persistent:yes and I still see those darn red x's. Now I am starting to see that it is messing up my backups! Any other tricks out there?

can you elaborate on the method you are using to establish the shares?

Are you using a login script?

In a Windows 2000 domain environment, I use the same net use command to establish user network shares but also use a net use /d command in the logoff script as well.

What type of backup are you using? Would it be more pratical to use the UNC path for the backup rather than a drive letter?

I think he meant once the share is establish and if you don't use the network share for like 15 minutes it disable it and when you click on it again, it enables the share again. I remember reading about it where it keeps the shares active, but forget where I read it from. If I found it, I'll post it.

That makes sense to although I didn't get that out of his questions.

MoFunk, what type of machine are you connecting to when you establish the share? How are you authenticating?

Yes that is exactly it. This is a home machine running WinXP Pro and I am using a Win2K3 server to use for filesharing and backups. I should have explained better. The above is exactly what happens. I am just using the windows backup program and I have a drive mapped as backup. But late at night when it is time to backup I get an error stating that the drive cannot be found, I hit the browse and save and it works. I tried to disconnect my share and then use the dos command net use F: \\server\share /persistent:yes to recreate it thinking it would work, but it does not.
