I've built a new system along with hooking up some of the old hardware. When I try to install WinXP Home to it, get to the Setup and either go to installing the OS or going to Recovery Console, it tells me that there's no hard drive installed, even though I have one already hooked up and that the motherboard detects it in the system. I had successfully installed it three times on my old system, even with the hard drive that's now on my new system! Please help! :(

Here's my new system:

Abit IS7 (NEW)
P4 3.06GHz w/ 533MHz FSB (NEW)
Coolmax 550W Switching Power Supply (NEW)
1 Kingston HyperX 512MB DDR400 (NEW)
40GB Western Digital 5400RPM Ultra ATA/100
Samsung 52X·24X·52X CD-R/RW (SEMI-NEW)
SoundBlaster AudioPCI 128D
PNY nVidia GeForce 4 Ti4400

Which IDE controller is the hard drive hooked up to? If that Abit board has another onboard 3rd party IDE controller, you might need to install the drivers for it during the WinXP setup (i think pressing F6 right when you get into the setup) If that's not the case, try to put it on different IDE channels or play with the master/slave settings. Another way to troubleshoot is just try like a Win2K CD and see if that will recognize the drive.

btw, your system looks really nice...are you sure you want to pair up that slow hard drive and handicap your overall performace? There are some really good deals out there on some of the new 7200rpm 8mg cache hdd...The western digitals even include a 3 yr warranty!

What I've seen in the past, is if the BIOS recognizes your HD, but Windows doesn't, it's usually a problem with the format or partition.

mitaiwan, your advice on putting the cable connectors on the other IDE channels did the trick! The cable connector that's connected on the hard drive was on IDE1, while the CD-RW was on IDE2. Reversing them just made my new system load faster and the Windows XP Setup now recognizes the hard drive in the system! Thanks alot, man! I'm just so happy to run a much faster system than I did for the past 3½ years.

As for getting a hard drive with 7200RPMs, that's on my wish list. But the hard drive that's in the new system right now is good enough for me as it is. I'm also looking into a new sound card to replace the one I have in the system, as well as another 512MB Kingston HyperX DDR400 memory card (I made a mistake in ordering that card instead of the 2x 256MB Kingston HyperX DDR400 memory cards that I wanted, but I see that the one memory card works well in my system for now...) so that it'll work on dual-channel.
