I have one of the original computers in our office, pre-service pack 2 and i was wondering if i could use one of the newer computers XP discs to install SP2 on my machine from the new disc with sp2 already on it? Sorry that sounds kinda confusing... thanks bunches...

Your best-bet is to probably Slipstream SP2 onto a new disk (using your original WinXP disc as a base).

All you need is to download the full SP2 upgrade and have your WinXP disc handy, along with a CD-Burner, then follow any of these instructions:

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1626

The end result will give you a WinXP w/SP2 already on the CD... any installation of WinXP using this new CD will automatically install SP2 on your system... I've already slipstreemed my WinXP disc with SP2... it's great!

Not as far as I have ever figured out.

I think there might be confusion. The OP is asking (I think) "Can I install SP2 (just the service pack, not reinstall of os) onto machine A using the "XP With SP2" cd from machine b (a slipstreamed disk already)

Either windows update, or if you have multiple computers, the network install package.

Download the full network install package, you'll want it again sooner or later.

And no, I don't think you can install it from the cd like that.

Perhaps the original question is a bit confusing... yes, no matter what, download the full SP2 network install package, and in either case (regardless of what the OP is asking), it's still probably a good idea to make a slipstreamed WinXP disc with SP2 (unless of course, he already has one!).

What nweaver says is correct though... just install the SP2 from the network install package.

I would assume he could use the XP SP2 disk and run the repair option.

That would effectively upgrade you to SP2 whilst leaving all your apps and files intact.

May take a little longer than just running the SP2 install, but it should work.
