I am curious more than anything else as to how XP's remote desktop feature works. On the specs for the OS, it is stated that with the Remote Desktop feature you can access an XP machine's desktop from any windows computer. How does this work? Do you need to install any software on the other computers? Or is it run through a web browser?

I use pcAnywhere to do remote computer management and know that both machines must have the pcAnywhere client installed for it to work. Is XP's remote desktop feature then a possible replacement for pcAnywhere?

Remote Desktop is a subset of terminal server.

You will need client software on the remote machine. I believe the client software will ship with all versions of WinXP, but I'm not sure.

Also, you can create diskettes that will allow you to install the client on Win9x/NT/2000/XP machines, I believe.

A friend and I attempted to use this the other day. It can be accessed via the help menu.
You can contact your "partner" via email or the MSN messenger (ack!).
We chose email : )
Anyhow, you send of an invite to your friend, and he recieves and email with a small attachment. It is an executable of some sort. All you have to do is click it, and away you go.
You can use a shared password to protect the connection.
We couldnt get it to work, there were name resolution problems.
No doubt it uses some form of RDP, like terminal services
