WINXP Reboot

Just returned from my mother-in-law's house---defeated. Earlier today my mother-in-law who lives across the street reported that she couldn't turn her computer off. My wife went over and was able to turn the system off.. later this evening my wife went across the stereet again and shortly thereafter called and asked some quetions because she had checked the board set-up and everything else she could access but the real problem wouldn't fix. Here's what i found when I went over.

When the system is powered up, the board boot process runs as designed and then the windows "excuse me" page comes up - windows is unable to start because - and then it reels off some reasons why this may have occured. At the bottom of the page already highlighted is start windows normally with a count down window. if you allow the count down or hit enter the system goes to the WINXP opening page with the little groups of three gidgets going by right to left and normally after a short time WIN-XP starts. In this case after a short time the system reboots and comes up with the "excuse me" page again. This cycle continues as long as you care to watch - - - System boot , windows I'm sorry can't start page, windows opening page - and reboot.

If you attempt from the sorry page to enter safe mode it goes through the file dump procedure, and reboots. My first thought is to reload windows from the windows CD boot but mother-in-law doesn't want to lose her "c" drive files - you can't get far enough into the OS to copy files to anywhere else. She says she wasa in microsoft word trying to make some labels and the system locked up. She exited word and from the desktop attempted to restart - that's when it all began - according to her.

I built the machine for her in 2000 - I upgraded a couple of years ago with additional memory and the fastest available P3 at 1 gig. About six or seven moths ago i put the system in a new case because the reset switch on her "old" case broke.

How do we fix this problem?

Do you have the original installation cd? If so, you can try checkdisk. Boot from the cd, go to the first repair option, not ASR. Type chdsk / r , i think. This should run checkdisk and attempt to fix corruption problems. Can you use system restore? Or last bootable settings? That might help. Press F8 before booting into windows. Try these 2 first, then checkdisk, then system restore, then if problems persist, do a full repair.

From the only accessable operative page, the sorry windows didn't start page, none of the options get you anywhere out of the cycle of boot, excuse page, windows start page, reboot- welcome page never comes up - just reboot. The F8 safe mode option produces the file dump and reboot. I'm hoping to convince mother-in-law that she has to give up her data in order to get the system working again.

You can slave the drive to your system and get her data off that way, unless she has encrypted it.
What was she doing when the system went down?
Had she opened up email?
Had she opened an attachment?
