WinXp Re-Install - How to remove dual boot menu at start up

LouPoir

Lifer
New Dell E1505 - to remove all the Dell junk, I reinstalled MCE but now at boot up, I get a menu selection - there are two MCE items I can select.

How do I delete the one that is no longer valid.

Thx

Lou

Shame on you for not searching. 🙁 😛

Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup & Recovery > settings > Edit > make a backup of the boot.ini first, then remove the duplicate or incorrect entry. If you aren't sure which one to remove post the contents and we'll help you figure it out.

Great - which one ---

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Wow, that seems like yesterday. 420 is a good number. :beer:

Delete the last line
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

An alternative would be to uncheck "time to display a list of operating systems:"

FWIW you can also use MSCONFIG to edit some of the boot.ini settings. However you have more control when you do a manual edit.
