My power flickered and turned off all the things in the house including my computer. I started my computer back up and everything seems to be running fine.. but I can't connect to it remotely anymore for some reason.. the option is still checked in the system properties.. and i don't have any firewall installed other then windows firewall.

whenever i try to connect it just greys out the connect button for a second.. then pops back up so i can click it again (cause it didn't connect) .. but I don't get an error or anything.

but it was working fine before this little power flicker.. for months.

Turn off or make an exception in the windows firewall. Turn off RDP and then right back on. Reboot your switch/router.

i disabled windows firewall.. disabled.. applied.. enabled.. applied rdp in system dialog.. rebooted my router.. even tried doing a soft reset on my router.

still can't get it to work.

I didn't install anything new.. so I doubt it's a virus. it's something with my network settings. I just can't figure it out.

EDIT:

I haven't tried this yet, but I was searching on google and a lot of people were saying video card drivers were interfering with RDP.. which doesn't make much sense.. but I found several cases where they either upgraded their driver or downgraded it to work.

..and actually I did do a windows update that I wasn't really thinking about.. it probably installed some update that screwed it up.. so I'll have to check that and rollback.

EDIT#2:

Yep fixed it. I removed these 2 updates: KB970430 & KB971737

Install this update to help strengthen authentication credentials in specific scenarios. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

.....definitely strengthened them alright.

Yeah, it sounds crazy, but video drivers definitely HAVE messed up RDP in the past. Mostly ATI drivers.

Glad you found a fix for your problem.

so actually.. this never fixed my solution.

if i restart my computer.. rdp will work again for a while. maybe a few hours.. maybe a few days. but eventually it stops working and i have to restart again. but it's never consistent of when it stops working. so i'm confused on what's causing it.

any other ideas?

scandisk!!

Actually it should be "chkdsk /r" Dirty shutdown probably goofed up something in the NTFS volume and it is unable to load everything it needs for RDP. The chkdsk should repair and file system damage that happened during the dirty shutdown.

From an elevated Command Prompt, run the following command:
"netstat -an"

You'll get a list of ports that are listening on your computer. In the first bunch, you should see "TCP 0.0.0.0:3389.........LISTENING". If you aren't then your PC isn't listening for remote connections.

In the Services control panel, you should also see the "Terminal Services" service running. You should also see "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" running.

the 3389 is running in netstat.. also in services both of those are running.. there's another one after RPC called RPC Locater.. and that isn't running. I started that but didn't help.

Also looked through the troubleshooting and that didn't seem to help either.

I think the main thing to notice in being able to fix it.. is when I try to connect through RDP on another computer.. it greys out the connect button for 1second.. then enables it again because it can't connect. I DO NOT receive an error message or anything. If I try connecting to another IP on the network it greys it out for a lot longer.. maybe 10-15 seconds and returns an error message. "this computer cannot connect to the remote computer". So something is blocking the connection somehow.

I did chkdsk /r ..but it had to restart to do it.

Yes when you are running it on your system volume it has to restart so it can run before windows fully loads. So you did do a restart so it could run correct? If that didn't do it for you try a system restore back to a point where it did work.

yes, I did let it run after the restart.

I don't really want to do a system restore, but if nobody else can figure it out.. I guess i'll try that.

actually.. I went ahead and tried a system restore date.. on 3 different days.. each time the computer restarted and when it came back up said that the computer couldn't be restored to the date chosen.. press ok to continue to windows or pick another restore point.

so dunno.
