One day, I booted up my system and I had no mouse or keyboard control following the bootup. With no response, I hit the reset button to reboot. The system rebooted with only one problem. It redetected the NIC as a 1394 Net Adaptor instead of the 3COM adaptor that is installed. Because of this, my system will no longer hit the interent. I also lost alot of the TCP/IP settings, but restored those.
To try and correct this issue, I've done the following:
1. Downloaded the driver for the adaptor from 3COM and extracted the files.
2. Tried rolling the driver back, but no previous version detected.
3. Tried using the update driver function, but got a message stating that it could not find a driver in the extracted directory.
4. Tried removing the driver from the hardware manager and letting it get redetected. Funny, it won't let me over-ride it's choice of hardware when doing this.
5. Tried using system restore, going back to different dates to get the configuration back with the 3COM. Did not work.
I remember back in my days of using Win 98, I could over-ride the device selection first detected, but can't seem to do it in WinXP.
Does anyone know a way to do this? Or am I facing a wipe and clean install?
Thanks in advance.
