I'm getting a lot of these explorer.exe errors lately. I hope it's not bad memory. But these errors only occur when I'm using explorer; opening or usually right after closing a explorer window. Never had any errors from other programs. If it is bad memory, it should affect other programs too right?

I had one BSOD but I don't remember what I was doing at the time; don't know if that was related. Most of the time when the error occurs, I can just close the error window and nothing seems to be affected. Sometimes though, the taskbar reloads and some taskbar icons are gone like Winmx and Coolmon.

I have AVG free edition installed and running all the time. Only programs I download are from legit sources. So I don't think I have a comp virus.

I'd run/schedule a "chkdsk /f" on your drives. Then run MemTest86 overnight to be sure your RAM is OK. If the problem persists, grab your XP install disc run "sfc /scannow."

Also, check Device Manager to see if any problem devices exist, and consider checking to see if any updated chipset drivers have been released for your mobo.

This is typical behavior of an explorer.exe crash. Nothing unusual about that. The task bar is actually an instance of explorer.exe. If you ever lose the task bar and it doesn't come back, you can open the Task Manager (<Ctrl>+<Shift>+<Esc>), click the "New Task..." button, and type in "explorer.exe" to recover the taskbar. I used to have to do this all the time on Win2k SP1 with Half-life and an SB Live.

"explorer.exe" runs all the time,
not just when your browsing files.
Check & see where your "explorer.exe" file is located.
I read another post & a fake one was in a different directory from the original & running.
