WinXP Pro - Slow LAN performance?

I've made clean installs of WinXP Pro on both my laptop at work (p3 700 w/256Mb RAM, 10/100ethernet) and home (athlon 1ghz w/256Mb RAM, 10/100 ethernet), and with both system I've seen EXTREMELY slow network copying from system to system (around 25-30kbps over my NICs). Did I do something wrong, or is this happening to other people?

ADDENDUM-
Let me add that internet performance is fine (fast over both the Cable modem at home and the T1 at work), and the Task Manager's networking tab shows the NIC's utilization hovering around .25-1 Percent of capacity.

I have the same problem. Copying files over my school network or sending them to other users is a lot slower. My upload speed is now under 40 k, when last year i sent at 300. Of course, it might just be the network having problems

Mine copies files over with no problem. That is after they finally connect. It takes about a minute to display the contents of a network drive when I click on it in Network Places. I remember there was a registry setting to change that delay in Win2K, but I don't remember exactly what it was.
