WinXP Pro Problem (Possibly power supply?)

Slot A Athlon 700Mhz
AOpen Power Supply that came with computer (both 4 years old)
Everything else has been upgraded recently (WD 80GB HDD, 72X CDROM, 6X DVD, ATI 9000, SB Live Value, 2 Network cards Kingston and Realtek, Joystick)

Hi, I hear some fan whirring to different pitches recently, and it's either the power supply or one of the two cpu fans. I think it might be the power supply fan, but I'm not sure. Anyway, sometimes my system starts fine with no problems, but recently sometimes it halts completely on the WinXP Pro loading screen with the scrolling blue bar. I start up again and sometimes it locks again, sometimes I get into Windows and everything seems fine. The RAM tests fine at bootup, and no errors once I get into Windows. Considering I've had the power supply for 4 years, do you think it could be that and it's on its last legs? Thanks for any input.

What is your powersupply rated at, how many watts? If its 4 years old I'd put money on the fact you are overtaxing the living hell out of it. Spent all that dough probably should throw in a new PS too.

I'm not sure of the exact rating...I wanna say 300-350ish? Pretty old AOpen PS that came with the AOpen Full Tower HX08 case. 80mm intake fan in front, 80GB WD HDD, 3.5" FDD, Sony DRU-510A DVD+-RW, Kenwood 72X CD, Creative 6X DVD, and all the stuff I mentioned before connected. How easy is it to replace a power supply? Does it come with a switch or can I just disconnect this power switch and connect the new powersupply to it? Vantec stealth PS any good?

Thanks for the help.

I'd suggest finding the squeaky fan and replacing it. Failure on cpu fan won't help 🙂
If it's locking up, then it's prob not a short.

I've never been a fan on newer sound cards as people always say they fudge up their system. Do a search here on your sound card and see if anything comes up

power supplies are super easy to replace. just make sure you get a good one w/ at least 2 fans and reputable maker. do a search on pws or power supply and youll find a link to an article that explains how to buy a good one

found it

Hrm...the sound/halting seems to be gone for the moment. I hate intermittent errors.

I was thinking maybe a Vantec Ion or Stealth PS...I'm not quite sure how to tell if the numbers are good though (mostly because I'm tired and don't want to try to figure out my system's power requirements)...

Thanks for the info and the article link.

As for a PS I'd recommend an Antec. Probably a 350 watt. I was looking at a Vantec Stealth as well, but from reviews I read I hear they are not to stealth (pun intended 😉) If you don't mind noise I hear they are otherwise good PS. I do know for a fact Antec makes good ones. I have never had an Antec go bad.
