winxp printer/cash drawer problem

I am having a problem with printers and cash drawers in windows xp. When I boot up, the first time I try to print or open my cash drawer, it does nothing. After you try to print something, you turn the printer off, and then back on, and then it prints and/or opens the drawer. It is pretty inconvienient. it only does it in xp, and only with generic/text printers. Is there anything that XP does special with printers?

Try setting your printer driver to "print direct to printer" rather than using the spooler. Spooler Settings button on Details tab of printer properties (rt. click on ptr icon). Or possibly add a Page Feed at the end of print job.
