WinXP - performance issues?

Is WinXP slower than M$'s current OSes? I'm using Win2k myself, just wanna know if it's worth to go WinXP. (WinXP looks nicer!!)

If you use WinNT4 as a base point, then WinXP is 20% slower, Win2k is 10% slower. In terms of pure speed, NT4 is the FASTEST windows version, 10-20% better than Win9X/ME as well. YMMV 😉

NT might be faster but who the hell wants to run that POS.. i have to use it at work every day.... BLAH... comeing home to XP is great..

windows 3.1 is faster htan 2000..... woah

NT4 is probably the most meticulous of the WinOSes when it comes to hardware. Assembled from the right components it is *very* stable.

As far as eye candy is concerned... who cares what it looks like! The only thing that matters is; can you get what you need done in a reasonable manner. A great looking desktop isn?t going to allow you to accomplish your tasks any easier!

Given a choice, I?d choose raw power over eye candy! 🙂

Escalade: I think it depends of hardware whereas WinNT is faster than W95 or not. I haven't tried NT on 486, but W2k ran on 468/66 32Mb RAM and it was about 10+ times (1000+% 🙂 slower than Win95. I have worked little over a year in company where everything is M$ NT-based for now and I don't think it's very stable OS any more: our proxy server dies 5 times a day, exchange mail server has probably more downtime than uptime, only way to get printers back working is restart NT over what they are shared and so on. If you want pure speed over eye-candy you don't use GUI anyway 🙂

ianching, you must be blind if you think it looks nicer. 😛

the new gui is horrible.

I think the new gui looks great. But as far as performance, as long as your system is fairly recent, and has at least 256mb of ram, there isnt much of a slowdown between 2k and xp

By the way, all I need is top-notch stability, so I think I would just stay with Win2k and wait until WinXP SP# (who knows what the # will be!)!!!

That's why I am not using the Win9x series, too many BSODs and errors............. 🙂
