WinXP over Win2000

I have been using Win 2000 Pro all these while. I installed WinXP Pro yesterday and just wanted to try it out and didn't expect any big difference.

Then there is one big surprise and I would like to understand why.

I used Roxio 7 to burn DVD and CD. For a long time, I was only getting 1X DVD-R writing speed even though I was using 4X media. Of course I thought it is an issue of media compatibility.

Just yesterday, after I installed WinXP Pro, I re-installed Roxio 7 and to my surprise, the same DVD-R was buring at max 4X speed. It used to take me about 70 minutes of writing time and now it's just 15 minutes.

Is it WinXP or something else? I didn't change any hardware or parameters ..

Anyone has similar experience?

Did you have DMA enabled for the DVD-R channel in Win2K?

Sometimes it defaults to PIO mode in 2K which is hugely slower when burning.

XP seems to turn DMA on by default for newer drives whereas in 2K you sometimes had to manually enable it.

Hi Canterwood,

I think you got the answer!

I did try to enable in win2k but was unable to do so.

That must be it.

How do I check if the DMA of my DVD-drive is on or off?
