WinXP on Pentium II 350 Mhz

Hi,
I have an old Pentium II 350 Mhz with 96MB SDRAM 100Mhz VIA Chipset Motherboard,40GB HDD
Can i install WinXP Home on this PC with some additional RAM upgrade ?
Would this affect my PC performance?
Thanks & Regards,
Anand

WinXP should run fine on this setup with some more RAM. You should get 128MB at least, but your aging computer will be a lot faster if you can put 512MB in. WinXP will be slower than cold molasses with 96MB. By the way, would this computer happen to be a Dell OptiPlex GX1? The specs you list are almost idenctical execpt for the memory.

I had it installed on a PII 300mhz with 192MB 66mhz SDRAM and it ran sufficiently, But I agree more RAM is a good idea, find out if that old board will take a 256mb stick as extra, that should set you up.

I'ev worked on a PII-300 with 128mb ram and a slow old 6Gb hdd it was pain in the a$$, minimum is 256Mb ram.

damn I guess I can't install win xp on amd k6-2 333 with 160mb ram. 160mb ram is the limit on my laptop.

Best thing for a laptop is windows 2000. My girlfriend's laptop is about the same speed and same ram as yours. XP was a DOG on it. Formatted and put 2000 on it and much faster. 2000 will give you all the stablity but without all the graphics and frills. 🙂

My friend has a Compaq K6-2 266 with 160mb, running Win2000Pro as server, works pretty well. WinXP might look better, and maybe bootup a little bit faster on slow machine(you can see the desktop sooner, but HD is still running like h3LL) than Win2000, but Win2000 runs faster with all the programs you installed.

Whoa -
Although XP will run on your setup, you are not gonna be able to do much.
For one thing, it is quite possible that your hardware is too old to have driver updates that are compatible with XP.

For another, Yes, XP can run, but, what about everything else you want to run.

Try Win98SE, at lease you would have a better chance running other progs.

compaq on your friend has all drivers for win2k?

I'd go with Windows 2000. XP will work, but it will struggle along.

Windows 98 would be fine if you can find the drivers.
