WinXP new install and HD is F:

I recently did a new install of Win XP Pro(post reformat of HD) and the install placed the hard drive as F: rather than C: Now, I know that this does not matter other than the fact that I like my hard drive on C: but why does this happen and how can I get my HD back to C: ?
Windows placed the Zip as C:, the DVD as D:, and the CDRW as E:. I could disconnect all but I still need a cd in order to install Win XP.
Any help would be nice. Thank you

That is purely because of the Zip drive

We have found at work that having the Zip drive connected while installing Windows XP will cause the main hdd to be the last drive letter.

As it's a clean install, you unplug the Zip drive, reinstall Windows, then plug the Zip back in (no need to disconnect other cd drives)

If zip drive is seen in Disk Management then you "may" be able to change the drive letter assignments there. I have rearranged drive letters there (I just did it Friday on one system) but I have never tried it on "C:" so I'm not totally sure if it will work. To get to the Disk Management section to try this, right click My Computer, select Manage and then Disk Management. In the window in the bottom right, right click the square that says Disk 0, Disk1, etc and see if there is a change drive letter option.

you can't change xp boot drive drive letter in disk management.
I agree with the zip drive as the route cause of the problem!

Thanks for the help. Ah well, I guess I just get more practice doing a clean install. Internal zip goes bye bye for a bit.

I have done a "repair" from the CD boot menu and fixed this....
