WinXP/Networking/Sharing

Windows XP can be configured to share in the style of Win9x or Win2000. By default, it shares like Win9x by letting everyone access the folder with either read or read/write permissions and it is non-user specific. I have managed to figure out how to revert it to the win2000 way of sharing, which is user specific and the access control levels are very complex.
I am on a campus network, and I have a lot of friends that run Win9x and a lot that run 2000/XP. I would like to create a folder that is accessible to everyone (without password or login) with read permissions but only accessible to a certain user group with read/write permissions. So I would like to integrate both sharing features. I have attempted this several times, and I have not yet found a solution: when one sets the sharing permissions to everyone, my win9x friends still can't access it, and are prompted for a password that will not work even if the correct one is entered.
I appreciate any responses that may lead me to the answer!

Thank you very much for your time with posting the links to the website. I appreciate your concern very much. However, I may have to blame myself for being unclear... What I want to do is to accomplish the same thing as with simple network sharing through the advanced network sharing! So that there are only a few folders that require specific users and passwords and some that don't require anything at all, free access *read permissions only though.

Sorry for any inconveniences!
