WinXP: mapped a network drive, no option to save password anymore

idea

Golden Member
The fileserver is slackware running samba. The drive is Z:\ and WinXP no longer saves my login and password after rebooting. After logging into Windows there is an error "cannot reconnect to a mapped drive" and I have to enter my login/password again to access Z:\. The option to "Save password" is no longer in the dialog box 🙁

This has happened to me once before a long time ago but I don't remember how to fix it. What I need to do is tell WinXP to allow me to save the password to log in to the network machine.

The problem started after I upgraded from kernel 2.4.16 to 2.6.x but I really think the problem is on the WinXP side.

Answered my own question. You need to disconnect the drive and reconnect it.

Windows Explorer -> Right click drive letter
"Disconnect"
Locate the directory you wish to map (again)
The login/password box will pop up, this time with the "save password option"
