one day windows xp started asking me to choose a user for my computer. there is only one account on this computer, and that is mine. it doesn't even need a password to log into windows, but all of a sudden it's asking me to choose a user. i know it's not that big of a deal, but I can't press the power button of my computer and go out anywhere, expecting it to log in automatically and run the startup programs. I have to be with the computer until windows shows the welcome screen. how do I fix this?

thanks

How to Configure Windows XP to Automatically Log On a User Account

For Windows to automatically log on a user account during the startup process, the following must be met:

- The Welcome screen must be available
- Guest account access must be turned off
- There must be only one user account on the computer
- The user account must not have a password

To make the Welcome screen available:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts.
2. Click "Change the way users log on or off".
3. Click to select the "Use the Welcome screen for fast and easy logon" check box.
4. Click OK.

To turn off Guest account access:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts.
2. Click the Guest account.
3. Click "Turn off Guest access".

To remove the password from the user account:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts.
2. Click the user account.
3. Click "Remove my password".
4. Type the password in the "Type your current password" box, and then click Remove Password.

This happens when you install the .NET framework service pack update from Windows Update.

I don't know how to fix it (assuming it even can be 'fixed'), but I've run into this before and the behavior is expected after installing this update.

Yup, I had a fresh install of XP SP2 last week, and it would log in automatically, until I installed .NET, then I would have to click my user icon to login at the startup following the reboot from .NET's install. Then I installed .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, and just as the KB article says, the system auto logs in now.
