winXP is acting up...

ok... something's really screwed up with my sister's laptop. first her sound wouldnt work... you can hear stuff, but when you double click the volume control in the system tray to adjust the volume, it tells you that there's no sound mixer installed. yet under device manager, it is installed and reports as working correctly we've tried reinstalling drivers, we tried unhiding windows multimedia and reinstalling that, but still no go...

then her wireless card started acting up... i thought it was just because it needed driver and firmware updates like mine did (almost exact same system and card). well after the updates, it still didnt work. so i'm browsing around int the wireless card properties and it says something about the windows management instrumentation not working correctly.. so i open up the services properties and what do you know... WMI wont start... says something about it being corrupted... so i search the microsoft knowledge base and find something that tells me to delete a folder then restart, and it should rebuild the files... well it rebuilt them... but they were still "corrupted"

i'm about to format and reinstall XP, but that'll prob take some work convincing my sister to let me do that so anyone have ANY clue whats going on here before i do that?
