WinXP installing problem???

whenever I try to open a large installation file in xp, the computer, i guess, TRIES to run the installation. During this tim,e the mouse moves, but everything else doesn't work, as in everything slows down... A LOT.. This goes on forever until i reboot my system.. Is there something wrong??? or is it that the file i downloaded is corrupt?
 
i can only select "DMA if available" for my primary, but my secondary is on DMA. but the thing is.. i only have one drive... so i don't know....
