i'm trying to do a clean install of XP Prof, and everything goes fine until the final stages of the installation. when it starts up and says "applying settings" it just freezes, then the screen goes black. i have no idea what it could be. any ideas?

thanks in advance.

How many mins left to completion. I know this happens sometimes when the installer tries to install certain drivers. Have you run a drive test eg checkdisk. Boot into the cd, run a repair install and type 'chkdsk /p' see what it finds......

well the installation is actually already complete. it just when it asks for the administrator password. i put it in then, it says "applying settings..." and that's when it hangs.

Could be that it isn't happy with the video card--which one are you using? ( winxp drivers aren't working well with it, needs it's own drivers ) Can you get in via safe mode?
