WinXP Install

Our company (AWSI) received its copy of RTM after beta testing ended. My boss gave me the cd to install on my computer-oh joy!-but it won't recognize the product key or allow me to install from within RC2. I logged onto windowsbeta.microsoft.com and got new product ids for both versions (we also received the home version), but still no luck. I booted with WinMe boot disk, but it says it won't install from
DOS.

I sent Microsoft a message but all I got back was a canned response. What a pain.

Ok, I realize I'm software challenged 🙂 but what the heck am I doing wrong? I need to get this installed by Monday a.m. Anyone have suggested resources or solutions?

RC2 is still working. (I'm using it now)

Thanks,
Robert

I'd use partition magic, make another partition, format it, hide your present OS, make the new one active and re-boot and install it.

From elsewhere here on the forums i've learned that you can go into x:\i386 and type winnt to install in Dos mode.

Why can't you just boot from the WinXP CD and let the setup program step you through it? You can go clean or you can do an upgrade install. I would never try to run a Windows NT / 2K / XP install from within Windows (or from DOS) unless I absolutely had to.

Regards,
Jim
