Jeez... another joke thread?

If your serius the answer is: you can't get anything more than diagnostic beep codes out of it. If you could find the resistance and max wattage, you could makea make-shift speaker... I guess.

The speaker on the enclsoure is indeed capable of sound, albeit of a rather poor quality. You are probably confusing that with the onboard speaker on the motherboard. Those are typically limited to beeps and squeels.

These days, The BIOS is the only one that makes sounds for the small case speaker.

In the old days of DOS, there were programs that played songs thru that speaker.
As it was supported by BASIC programming software.

This is somewhat off-topic, and I think the poster has gotten across that he is talking about a normal speaker, but you can still very easily write programs to "beep" the internal speaker, its part of the standard Windows API/.NET Framework. Actually when people write their first windows service it is one that just beeps every 10 seconds. =)

i have the manual. i plugged the case speaker into the mobo like the manual says. even swapped it incase i got pin 1 wrong. no sound either case

You used the AUDIO2 Front Panel Audio Header (P. 20 of manual / P. 24 of the PDF) and not the SPK1: Internal Speaker Header (P. 10 of manual / P. 14 of the PDF), right?

no, i used spk1 from page 10. on page 9, it says connect the case speaker to spk1.

isnt audio2 for front panel audio ports?

You want to utilize the case speaker for "real" audio and not system beeps which is contrary to its intended function. This is why I suggest not following the manual. SPK1 is for system beeps, while AUDIO2 is for real sound getting piped out of your sound card (granted, through the front panel ports.)

the case speaker sucks and even if you get it to work, it will be in mono and probably not a mix of both channels, but only one of them. If your really set on this, buy a small set of speakers for like $5-$10 and put them inside the case and run the wire out and plug it in. It won't sound all the great, but ALOT better than a case speaker.

"The PC speaker driver plays only .wav files. It does not play .mid, .rmi, or .avi files. "

so i can't play a dvd or a .mpg file? :(

yeah, i am getting external speakers. but since my case came w/an internal speaker, i got curious on how to make it work. it's the geek in me. :)

You wouldn't recognize any familiar sound file from your internal case speaker. If you don't have any speakers yet, get a set of inexpensive headphones. Anything in the less than 20 dollar price range is going to vastly superior to cheap desktop speakers. Even after you buy some real speakers, the headphones will come in handy from time to time. Make sure the headphones have cord at least 8 or 9 feet long.

This a major annoyance with me. If you buy a branded computer, sounds come out of the case speaker. So what if it is mono and crappy. At least you have sound without having to have external speakers.

I think this is a major drawback to building your own computer.

I do have a nice speaker system, that isn't the point. The point is, most of the time a crappy mono speaker is all you need just to hear those wonderful system sounds.
