WinXP Home -> why does taskman not 'do anything?'

This is strange. On my girlfriend's computer, when I hit CRTL-ALT-DEL, nothing happens. Even if I go run -> taskman.exe, nothing happens. No error message. No disk activity. Nada. The file is there in c:\windows, but nothing happens when it is launched. Any reason why this might be happening? Wouldn't Windows Protection Services restore it if it was broke?

Yep, most likely cause right now of that symptom is an infection. Some kill certain processes when started (taskman is often one of them).

NavCE didn't find any infections. I just did a total scan. She says she had klez at one point, but had it removed. It doesn't appear to be there anymore. There isn't anything starting up that appears to be nasty, either.....anyway to restore that functionality?

Probably a dumb question, but are the defs upto date? Also, (curious) why is your GF running NavCE isn't that a bit overkill? (albeit, I'm running it also 😉)
