WinXP Home weird printer issue

I have a XP Home system I am fixing for a friend and after removing almost every spyware program known to man, the system keeps prompting me that a new printer was detected. There isn't a printer hooked up to the machine. I checked the printers folder and deleted everything there. I keep getting propmted to install hardware that doesn't exist. I have also tried Microsoft's 298370 article and it did not help. Any thoughts?
