Second box at home. Bought a WinXP Home full version and don't really feel like Re-formattiing and loosing/rebuilding everything. Not my mainbox so it's not critical really except for my girls use this and have their collective stuff on it, some home work maybe.

Was wondering if anyone else has just installed WinXP over Win98 and how it went. I know there is a Win98>WinXP upgrade version, but this is not one of those.

To be honest, the only difference between the home and upgrade versions is that one requires you to verify a previous installation of windows before installing. (If you format, it will see the old installation before it does and verify itself.)

It's a way for MS to get more money.

It should work no problem. XP will verifty any version of windows 98 and above, as these still qualify as "in-date" OSes.

If you have a rather complicated system with a lot of software and special settings, upgrade might save a lot of time of post Installation configuration. Otherwise you are better off to start from scratch.

If you decide to upgrade.

Look into your AutoRun settings and disable every thing that AutoStart and essential to Windows actually starting, and boot before you start the upgrade (you can enable the compatible AutoStarts after the installation is done).

If you have old utilities that might not be compatible with WinXP uninstall them.

Example if you use the Motherboard Monitor (MBM5) program the Win98 installation will not work with WinXP. It is the same program but it needs to be reinstalled to adapt the installation to WinXP.

Make sure that all the hardware drivers are available in a directory of your choice on the hard drive (WinXP has a lot of drivers in the installation package but any driver post 2001 might be needed to be provided manually).

It might also work better if you change the Video drivers to the generic Win98 VGA before you Upgrade.

Good Luck.
