WinXP Home CD-Burning Software Question..

I am trying to explore the built-in software within WinXP. I have ran into a problem that I can't find a solution to. When I go to transfer files to the CD-Recorder drive, once I reach 300MB worth of data, it tells me the disc is full and can't hold any more data. The blank CD will hold 700MB of data. Why is it doing this? I've tried several discs, and the same thing happens. Thanks!

It's a Sony 12x/8x/32x CD-RW drive. I forget the exact Sony model number.

Also, I wasn't clear on this, but it says it is out of space when I am trying to transfer the files from one folder to the temporary folder WinXP creates within the CD-RW drive (for me it's the F: drive) before I actually try to burn. Thanks.

I just found out what type of drive it is, it's a Sony CRX160E.

Ok, I think I am learning something here. When WinXP creates the "Temp Image" of what files are to be burnt to the CD, do these files actually move to some folder, taking up space in the HD partition where Windows is installed? The reason I ask is that when the "Image" was attempting to be written is when I got the message out of space. I then deleted the Temp Contents from the CD-RW drive folder and got a system beep. It said I was low on disk space on my D: drive (Windows Install Partition). I id the disk clean-up and it free'd up about 300MB of space, the same amount it stopped at during the temp image process. Anothe question with that. If WinXP does make a temp image of what is to be written in the Windows installed partition drive, do these files get deleted once the CD is burnt, or do they reside there until you manually delete them. The reason this is brought up is because in the root of my D: partition, there are two sizable files that I do not recognize. They are.. hiberfil.sys (524MB's) and Pagefile.sys (787MB's). Thanks...

I don't have Sony here, but I can think of two things to try: (please forgive me.... my knowledge is VERY limited)

1. Try putting all the files you want to copy in a single folder (anywhere), then drag&drop that folder on top of the F: drive shown in windows explorer or My computer (try it both ways, you may find one works and one doesn't)

2. Try going to the Sony website and see if they have an XP version of their software available. (I did this with my HP and found 'record now' waiting for me there)

3. Keep bumping this post 'cause there are peeps in here to answer almost anything! (Long Live anandtech 😀 )

edit: I'm pretty sure once you close the burning window, the files are erased... I think it gives you a choice whether to close the buriing window after successfull write or not (so you could burn multiple copies if you dont shut it down inbetween)

edit #2: make sure you erase everything showing in the F: drive before you start (or put in a disk). It may be that you are trying to put it in their twice since the 1st try was not successful.

I just tried it here using the XP software and it seems easiest to open My Computer then drag&drop your files to the CDRW drive (don't make a directory, just drop them on the drive). Then it will tell you files are ready to be copied in the taskbar 'balloon' message.

If this doesn't work, I'd try uninstalling any CDRW software you have on there (from Sony, etc.), turn off your computer, disconnect the drive, boot, then turn off again and connect the drive and let XP detect it.... (does XP have native drivers for this drive? If so, let them install and do not install anything else) Only install Mfgr. software if XP does not have natives for your drive.

most mfgr drivers are not XP compatible, but the XP natives (if they exist) do pretty well.

hope this helps!

Thanks for your help Insidious. I figured out what it was. As I earlier suspected, when moving files to be burnt to the the CD-RW drive, WinXP does in fact create a temporary file containing all data to be burnt, in the partition in which you have Windows installed. What was happening was that my drive space was at 300MB remaining and it couldn't copy anymore to the "temp" image because I was actuallu out of space in my Windows directory partition. I free'd up some space and tried again and it worked as advertised. Thanks for the tips!

if you want to free up some more disk space, you can turn off the hibernation option in xp. With hibernation enabled, xp reserves space on your hard drive roughly equal to your physical memory so that you can shut down for a while and then choose to restart your pc with all your apps in exactly the same state as you left them. I'm guessing thats what the hiberfil.sys file that you mentioned is.
