WinXP Home BOOT ISSUES

Ok, heres the deal. Yesterday I tried installing WinXP Pro (without SP2 - I have the old one) and it was just not working out. We were getting blue screen after blue screen so I found my old XP Home CD with SP2 and installed that. The installation went more smooth than the XP and now I'm typing this from that installation actually.

The problem is that sometimes when I start up the computer it gets to the XP loading screen (with the little blue bar) and just stays there, doesn't go anywhere. Also sometimes if it does manage to get past that it goes to a black screen and nothing shows up. And then there's the obvious where it does boot up; considering I'm typing this from there right now.

I was reading and searching around and some of the problems described said it could have been a hard drive controller or driver issues but I'm just not sure - which is why I'm here, please help. If you have ANY idea what the issue could be.

Also going to ask - would upgrading right to WinXP Pro with SP2 fix all the issues? I read in a few places that XP Home is just iffy sometimes with AMD X2's and that installing Pro is the best bet, but I'm so mentally exhausted trying to figure out all these problems.

HELP!

I don't see how XP Home would react any differently to X2s than XP Pro does.
First thing I'd do is run a memtest.

Umm.. any solution? I'm going to try and upgrade to SP2 XP Pro and see if that works. I mean, it's weird because sometimes Windows boots and then other times it doesn't - so weird.
