WinXP has Reduced functionality if it's pirated?!

"Reduced functionality is already a part of the Windows XP activation process, but Windows Vista will have a reduced functionality mode that is enhanced, Microsoft said on its Web site on Wednesday."

Just curious...

Windows XP has reduced functionality that Microsoft will not allow any downloads except for security fixes unless it is activated and passes WGA.

not being able to use windowsupdate.microsoft.com? oh that's it?!

i wonder why they allow security fixes then?! i mean if you're smart enuf to pirate, then you're smart enuf to manually get updates.

not allowing the security fixes would have probably made ALOT more people get a real copy of Winxp, i would think...

it's to prevent the spread of worms and such that cause internet slow downs.

I just installed Windows XP and had to call Microsoft to get it activated by phone. I got the pop-up that my product may not be genuine and that I should contact MS immediately. It seems that MS is really making sure what is installed is not pirated O/S or the like.
They make a thing on having the COA very necessary + the CD key.

Well, it the extra time involved but I realize that there's no shortcuts anymore. Most software companies are tighening their program usage nowadays.

I just had to call MS to activate an HP laptop I had to reinstall XP on. It said my Key wan't valid even though I used the XP CD that came from HP and the key from the COA sticker on the bottom. I called 5 times and spent a total of over an hour on hold. The 5th call went right through, go figure.

Your freedom is getting sucked away and you don't even know it...

You call it freedom to be able to knowingly copy something you bought and hand it out to friends, Just so they will not have to buy it?

I call it stealing!!

lol tell me what "freedom" is being repressed.

Dont like how a product works? Use something else.

There are quite a few software makers that have used product activation long before MS ever did, did you feel like your "freedom" was being sucked from you then? 😉

Spot on! Preach it brother! 🙂

The only bad experience I've had thus far is with a notebook at work where we use a VLK and the OS on this notebook was indicating it might not be genuine. Not bad considering it's the first machine out of 600 deployed. In any event, Microsoft does provide web links and tools to go through the process of validating the authenticity of the license. 😉
