WinXP + GF4 + Unreal = sadness. :(

This is terrible! reader beware!

I recently upgraded to winXP ... which runs great for everythign else BUT unreal (the original game from 4 years ago). 🙁 It works in safe mode (windowed at lower res, uding software rendering), but crashes when loading to normal mode (full screen using D3D or openGL). I'm sure you guys understand the seriousness of this issue. If I can't play unreal, I've lost like 25% of my gaming fun!!! totally unacceptable! please help.

Symptoms. Program crashes during load. at the little unreal logo. I have to end the process in order to make it go away. I've tried using a bunch of game-specific drivers for the video settings (different patches with both D3d and openGL). It's the same in eihter case ... so maybe it's not a video issue ... just some winXP silliness??? I ran the program compatibility wizard in winXP, doesn't run in win95 or win98 mode either.

My system: PIII-533mhz, 256MB rdram, lots of HD space, PNY Geforce4 4400 with the NVIDIA 28.32 drivers. Desktop is set to same resolution as in game. No other programs running.

ANY IDEAS? anyone else able to get unreal running with similar config? thanks. any help/ideas would be cool. 🙂 Actually, has ANYONE got Unreal to run in winXP? If so, what config?

That must suck! Anyway, have you tried to run Unreal through UT? I know there is a way to do it, but don't know it off the top of my head. I suppose the biggest problem with that method might be whether Multiplay works properly.

Thanks for reminding me to re-instal Unreal BTW. 🙂

Ya that playing Unreal through UT only works for the single player mode ... or with other people running UT. Go ahead and reinstall, it's a classic game! So much better than UT. 🙂

ripp,

Assuming you've already installed the v226 patch, use the following settings for Direct3D in your unreal.ini.

Translucency=True
VolumetricLighting=False
ShinySurfaces=True
Coronas=True
HighDetailActors=True
UseMipmapping=True
UseTrilinear=False
UseMultitexture=True
UsePageFlipping=True
UsePalettes=True
UseFullscreen=True
UseGammaCorrection=True
UseDetailTextures=True
Use3dfx=False
UseTripleBuffering=True
UsePrecache=True
Use32BitTextures=True
dwDeviceId=0
dwVendorId=0
UseVertexFog=False
UseAGPTextures=False
UseVideoMemoryVB=True
UseVSync=False

Performance for most (if not all) of the Unreal based games took a nose dive since the v21.83 drivers. Since none of the Unreal/UT games are supported any more, we're pretty much out of luck unless nVidia can correct this without having to take a backward step for the newer games.

For got to mention, if you're having a hard time just getting the game to initiate in Direct3D, you can force it here:

[Engine.Engine]
GameRenderDevice=D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice

So much better than UT.

I'm having a hard time comprehending that statment........

I suppose the biggest problem with that method might be whether Multiplay works properly.

Dose it matter? Unreal is a single player game only in my book, multi is just kinda tagged on.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your system, don't overclock anything and make sure that you have that latest 226 patch. While this won't fix your crashing problems, the new OpenGL renderer at Old Unreal provides enhanced performance and several new rendering features.

I've never had any problems with Unreal under Windows XP.

Even UT is bascially unplayable with a GF4 in D3D with current drivers. I've heard that 27.42 drivers fix the UT D3D problem, but don't know if it helps Unreal. Give it a shot.
