Two of the computers at work recently started to crash frequently to BSOD screen. Either that or they'd reboot themselves, though after I disable automatic reboots in Windows this became less frequent (still happens occasionally though!) The error message that most frequently appear on the BSOD screen is:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_EQUAL

though sometimes other message did appear. What could be the reason for this error message to appear? I've done a search for the meaning of the message (something about a process that tries to access forbidden area of the memory, or somesuch), but still don't quite understand what is causing it or how to fix it. Here are some more information about the systems that are having problems:

One of the computer that had this error is a P4 1.8 with ASUS P4S800 mobo. Removing the network card (3Com Etherlink 10/100) seem to reduce this problem considerably. However, installing the latest driver from 3Com did not seem to help. Could the card be defective?

The other computer has 1gz P3 on an ASUS CUSL2 mobo. I can't find what could be causing problems on this one. I have removed all add-on cards (a Soundblaster sound card and a Pinnacle video capture card), and it still crashes! Last Thursday I lost all patience and reformat the hard drive and reinstall Win XP near the end of the office day. I haven't had the chance to test or even reinstall all the drivers for the new installation, so I don't know how this will work.

Also, there's another computer at work, also a P4S800 with P4 1.8gz. Somehow I can't install WinXP on this one. Win XP simply can't recognize the hard drives! It would say it can't find any disk drives on that system. I tried Win 2000 Pro instead, and it installs fine, and had been running well ever since. But I'd rather have WinXP on that system! Why on earth won't WinXP recognize disk drives (there are 2 on this system, a Seagate and a brand new Maxtor) that are recognized by both the BIOS and Windows 2000?

I swear all the computers on this office is possessed somehow!

Thanks in advance for any help.

When I see BSOD on work PC's, the first thing to check is running/startup processes. People tend to get malware on their work PC's pretty easy. The next thing to do is open the cases and reseat EVERYTHING, don't just feel if it's tight. Pull everything off and put it back on. Finally, reinstall the windows service packs, SP6a for NT, SP4 for Win2k or SP1a for XP.
