WinXP freezes for 3-4 seconds every 5 min(why is that?)

Most of the time when I browse internet(cable modem on 3Com NIC), my computer freezes for couple of seconds and then resumes without problems.
Most of the time it happens while I'm browsing internet but sometimes when I switch between apps. What could be the reason? It never locks completely, just for a few seconds.

Have you looked in the Event Viewer for any help?? It usually reports most problems with the system and applications. Check into that.

Do you have a large HDD? Is any modem trying to contact the internet? check the system processes the next time it happens and see what hogs the most memory and processor power.

Just curious - are you using Netscape for your browsing? I discovered Netscape has the annoying feature that some pages cause it to freeze up for a few seconds while it is processing them. And not only does it freeze the window the page is loading in, but all other netscape windows you have up (ie: the email window and other navigator windows). That might make it seem like the PC is freezing up.
