I've just bought a pen drive from twinmos which is usb 2.0 and xp don't recognize it.

I've sp1 instaled.
I've also a mouse, keybord and a digital cam but i think that they are all usb 1.1 (and all work offcurse).
In system bios, usb 2.0 controller is enable also.

I went to the store and change it, a tested a new one there and it works fine, but when i got home the story was the same!

It is possible that the usb port has some kind of electric problem that blows up storage devices?
It's strange because i use the memory from my digital camara and it works fine.

You enabled USB2.0 support in the system BIOS, but does Windows XP have a driver properly installed and working in Device Manager for it?

But the drivers for usb2.0 aren't inclued in sp1? I thought so.

I think i found the problem, the color of usb internal cables are uniform? I've notice that the usb frontal and the expansion game/midi and usb2.0 that came with my asus p4p800 are pluged in a oposite way in the internal ports although the configuration is the same.

Take a look : http://img44.exs.cx/my.php?loc...amp;image=Img_0069.jpg

I dont know if u can notice, but look at the red cable (right internal port). In one port they are pluged in a left jumper in in the other on right.
I think that at the store, they put the GND cables on the power jumpers, the usb+ on the usb- and the power on the GND :(

It is possible that the pen as been damadge?

Well, if the +5 and Gnd had been switched, more than likely your motherboard wouldn't have turned on, or would have fried. So it's probably not that.

You said that USB 1.1 was working on that board - has any USB 1.1 device, worked properly in the ports that you are trying to plug the USB 2.0 flash drive into? If they work, then the wiring on the port is correct. If the +5 and Gnd is wired properly, but the USB+ and USB- (data) signals are backwards, then the system may detect an "Unknown USB device" every time. That happened to me once, with my front-panel USB ports, I wired one of them backwards. :p

Basically, if the ports work correctly for USB 1.1 devices, but not USB 2.0, then there are only two possibilities - drivers, and/or possible signal-quality issues. USB 2.0 High-speed signals require shielded cables, and sometimes the wires leading from the motherboard to the front-panel USB connectors are not shielded enough to work properly with USB 2.0 devices.

Of course, there is also the possibility that the USB flash drive itself is dead or defective somehow. Have you ever tested it in another machine, with working USB ports?

On my computer, the front USB ports have never worked for USB 2.0 devices - it just sees an "unknown device" of some type connected. However, USB 1.1 things (my mouse, camera, card reader, etc.) work perfectly. I always have to use the rear USB ports for 2.0 devices...it's strange, but I've never really looked into it.

What could possibly cause that?

Unless your motherboard explicitly has two types of USB ports (some 1.1, some 2.0) - early mobos did that - then the answer is poor-quality (unshielded) cabling. I even had trouble with clearly 2.0 capable ports, and a USB 2.0 hub with shielded cabling, it would lose the connection to the hub at least once an hour. It was really annoying. I'm not too happy, myself, with the compatibility issues that occur due to USB 2.0. (And my mobo's Win98se USB 2.0 drivers cause the computer to hard-lock, if you attempt to use a USB 2.0 device. :( Works fine in W2K/XP though.)

Edit: Found this link , discussing the "5th pin" on some mobo pinouts, that may prevent USB devices from working properly. Apparently, besides the 4 main USB wires (+5v, USB+, USB-, Gnd), there is a fifth, that is variously used for (nothing/key, USB overcurrent detection, shield gnd, others). In those circumstances, it may be best to simply not connect the fifth pin/wire.

Some more USB pinout examples here and here .
