Ok, around December last year, my PC running XP stopped detecting changes to the cdrom. If I were to open My Computer, it would not show the proper volumes in the cdroms. The only exception was if the CD had been in the drive when the PC started up. It still read the CD just fine, however, if I were to browse the contents of the drive.
After a while, I installed win2k3 server beta on the machine, no hardware changes whatsoever. Immediately after installing 2k3, the drives updated properly and continued to do so to present day.
I decided just today to put XP back on the machine, yet again no hardware changes. As soon as XP was done installing and up until now, the cdroms STILL do not update properly in XP. I honestly have no idea what could be wrong. This is only a minor annoyance but any help would be appreciated.

First thing I owuld do is change the IDE cable to the CD-rom. Then check to make sure the jumpers were set on it correctly. I had this same problem and turned out to be the cable.
