ok...
i think over the years we've come to expect less and less from windows os, so that when win2k and winxp came out we didn't even bother with all the bugs they had... we were just glad they were stable..

take win2k for example. still with all the latest patches if i am copying say a few Gigabytes from one drive to another the estimated time goes to hell. after a while it just reports it wrong (i.e. 123487 minutes left) or something.

take the fact that u can't set the default refresh rate in win2k or xp. so that all the games you play are at 60hz, unless you set it within a game or use powerstrip or something.

am i the only one that notices these little things?
i mean come on...

anyway...

my question this time is... in winxp when i am playing an mp3 and start a game the sound would stutter for a moment. similar to when you are trying to dial-up using a winmodem while the music is playing. you know you get that half a second pause of the music?

anyway... i was thinking it was the game at first.
but after trying to see whats wrong, i noticed that any time the resolution changes the sound stutters.

i have a athlon/via system. but the same thing happens on a celeron/bx system.

what gives? what is this?
anybody knows how to fix this?

(to see what i am talking about just play an mp3 and change the resolution in display properties)
??

I just changed my refresh rate while Winamp was playing, Eudora was running, and two IE windows are open. No stutter.

If you use a Winmodem, it would take some processing power to dialup. So, that might be a reason why it stutters. I'm not sure about the gaming refresh rates, since I don't play much. When I do, I'll look more into it.

A lot of how Windows runs depends on how you installed it, and the order you installed the drivers and updates. A good explanation comes from a THG post from my friend, Toejam31: read the thread

I've just reinstall Windows XP trying my hardest to follow the way he explains, and so far, I'm impressed how the responsiveness of my system has improved over my last Windows XP installation. What are your systems like? Here's mine:

Asus A7V133 rev 1.05
Athlon TBird 850MHz stock
512MB PC133 SDRAM CL=2
IBM 120GXP 40GB
Western Digital WD600AB 60GB
ATI Radeon 32MB SDR
Aureal Vortex 2 SQ2500
3Com 3C905B-TX-NM NIC
Lite-On 24x10x40 CD writer
Lite-On 16x40 DVD-ROM

You get that because the program you are launching is using up some of the cpu cycles the mp3 player is hoarding..Mp3's are totally encoded-decoded with the processor and anything that interupts the decoding will cause a "skip".

Yes, this is anoying..But fixable. For Nvidia users, get the NVrefreshrate fix, and there is also one out now for ATI users. Takes care of the refresh prob just handy. You can find the progs @ Guru3d.com

As far as the "time remaining" thing goes, I have never taken them seriously as they are never right anyway..
