WinXP bootup failed

After fixing my friend's computer (by unhooking my tower and hooking his into my monitor), my computer received the "disk error".
I've had this before and I could never figure out what caused it. I tried everything: recovery console (chkdsk, fixmbr, fixboot), recovery winxp, xp boot disk, cable check, and nothing seems to work!
This has happened to me before with the NTLDR error, which all were solved by a format. Is there a way to fix this w/o formatting?
BTW, I have a 250GB Maxtor drive running Windows XP Pro.

Welcome to the Forums 🙂 There's not a stray floppy diskette in the floppy drive by any chance...? That'll throw it if it's set to look at the floppy as a possible boot device.
