Here's the email I sent to MSI tech support.

I am using your KT3-Ultra motherboard, with an Athlon XP 1900+. Also I am using an MSI GeForce4 Ti-4200 128Meg card. I have the latest Via 4in1 drivers, and the newest Nvidia reference drivers. However randomly in Windows XP, when using my comptuer (does not seem to happen in games, just while in windows) the computer will go to a blue screen; which informs me that Windows has been shut down to avoid damage to my computer. It says nv4_disp.dll has caused an infinite loop. I have tried many things to fix this, different video card drivers, changing bios settings, but I cannot get the problem to go away. If you could help I would be appreciative.

If someone has ANY insight on this I would be very apprecitive, I have been having this problem for quite a while, and it appears to be getting worse as time goes on. Thanks a bunch.

Which version of the video card do you have?
G4Ti4200-TD (MS-8870) or G4Ti4200-VTP128 (MS-8886 Dual Monitor)

If it is the Dual monitor model, make sure if you do not have a 2nd monitor attached that
it is turned off in the preferences. It is enabled by default.

MSI posted on their site updated nVidia drivers date 10-21-02, which would be
better to use than the nVidia reference driver.

MSI nVidia driver Win2k-XP

My card does have TV-out and Dual monitor support. The first times I saw this blue screen is when trying to use 2 monitors, as a matter of fact! I can't really find anywhere in the nview display options that has 2 monitors enabled, everything looks good there. I will definately be trying out those MSI drivers now, but I think this horrible problem is coming slightly into focus now, I thank you so very much for the help. I will post again once I test out those other drivers. If you or anyone else has any other advice in the meanwhile, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks again!!

You my friend, have encountered the infinite loop bug, like so many others.. Are you running the latest service pack for WinXP? Also, when you say you changed the BIOS settings did you go to Fail-Safe defaults?

Actually no, I don't have the WinXP service pack, and I haven't changed the bios in that respect any. I have been using the high performance settings, but I have had this problem while using normal settings, and not the high performance ones.

Is there anything in the service pack that addresses any problems such as this (lockups, incompatibilities, instabilities)???

Thanks a lot

I have seen this article, however I have not read it in great depth, just brisk skimming. The results of this error that are described do not match my symptoms. It suggests that the infinite loop bug causes the system to instantly restart. However, the blue screen is what I experience. Thank you very much for the information though.

In regards to LiLithTecH's suggestion to use the MSI drivers:

I am and have been using the latest MSI drivers. The error has NOT occured since I switched to these drivers. I will continue to use these drivers, until the error occurs (which it appears so far that it will not, as I have used the computer for days without having any problems. It is however, in my opinion, a temporary fix. I was previously using the Detonator 40 drivers, which provided greater performance and more features in the driver options. However I can definately settle with these MSI drivers for now. Thanks to all those who provided help, you have solved many problems and headaches. If I get any further information or make any further developments I will post here again. Once again, thanks to everyone!

Update:

Well I have been using the MSI drivers successfully for the past few days. However about 10 minutes ago, the unthinkable happened: while playing a game of Starcraft, the computer came to a blue screen once again. Never has it happened in a game before, only in Windows to this point. Also, this time the error was different, but essentially the same. Same format and everything, however this time it said something up top to the tune of: "DRIVER IRQ IS NOT LESS THAN OR EQUAL" or something crazy like that. It made no mention to nv4_disp.dll which it had every other time. This problem is really becoming horrible, and I'm very quickly running out of ideas to fix it. Thanks to all those who have helped in the past, this is just one final call for help. MSI hasn't even bothered to reply to my emails, so you guys are my last hope. Thanks again
